Atmospheric Monitoring at the Site of the MAGIC Telescopes

The MAGIC telescopes in La Palma, Canary Islands, measure the Cherenkov light emitted by gamma ray-induced extended air showers in the atmosphere. The good knowledge of the atmospheric parameters is important, both for the correct and safe operations of the telescopes, but also for subsequent Mounting Brackets data analysis.A weather station measures the state variables of the atmosphere, temperature, humidity and wind, an elastic Lidar system and an infrared pyrometer determine the optical transmission of the atmosphere.Using an AllSky camera, the cloud cover can be estimated. The measured values are Soup Bowls completed by data from global atmospheric models based on numeric weather forecasts.
